User talk:Anton Mravcek
Welcome
[edit]Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia, Anton. Thank you for your fine work on Zero, One, and Negative one. Judging from the work you've done, it seems that your forte is mathematics; you can find plenty of articles in need of help in this field or others at Wikipedia:Pages needing attention.
You might find these links helpful in starting new articles or helping with existing ones: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.
If you have any questions, you can see the help pages, or, for individual help, feel free to add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page.
- If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username.
- You can sign your name on talk pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
- If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
Thank you for your contributions; I hope you continue to help us.

119 (number)
[edit]Hi Anton
I hope you didn't see the rollback as offensive. I had little time to correspond yeterday and wanted to restore the astronomical data before forgetting.
My feeling is that any formally numbered information should be included here. As chemical numbers are deemed eligible, so therefore should numbered astronomical data such as Saros numbers and Messier/NGC notation. As a matter of fact, the reason I included these data is that I was searching for the Saros number related to last spring's lunar eclipse. I would be pleased to follow youyr suggestion and leave a suggestion with the Wikinumbers project.

Hi Anton -
Following is how I would like the guidelines to read. I've copypasted the standard guidelines for Number N and added (in bold) what I would add. Since I'm not a member of this committee and therefore feel hesitant about an ad hoc addition of these guidelines to the page, peerhaps I can prevail upon you as a committee member to do so. Thanks. These numbers are all standardized, and have been used for many decades to describe astonomical objects and phenomena.

Number N is also
The atomic number of elementium.
The atomic number of an element temporarily called LatinNumberium. (* If the element has not even been discovered, it should not even be mentioned. *) /br
The Messier Number of Object A
The NGC (New General Catalog) Number of Object A
The Saros Number of a solar (or lunar) eclipse series.
Considered lucky in Country A.
Considered unlucky in Country B.
Very important in Religion A's sacred texts. (* Better to let Wikipedians versed in theology decide which religious associations of a number ought to be included *)
The designation of Country A's Highway Route Number N, which runs from Point A to Point B. (* Only major highways need be included, unless they have achieved fame beyond their location. *)
The code for international direct dial phone calls to Country A.
The registry number of the USS/HMS/RMS ShipName, CVN-Number N. (* Only major ships, such as aircraft carriers and gigantic cruise liners need be included *)
In the expression "folksy expression with Number N".
In the title of the movie There's Something About Number N. (* Only major studio releases ought to be included. Include independent releases if they achieve fame comparable to a major studio release. *)

"Grand Self-Appointed Guardians of Wikipedia"
[edit]Now, that's trashy talk. Very unprofessional. We're all here to make Wikipedia better, and slinging this kind of mud around isn't helping anybody.
Urhixidur 01:04, 2005 Jan 24 (UTC)
- It is far more unprofessional to express a prejudice in a brief edit summary. Your use of the word "icky" communicates prejudice far more powerfully than any longwinded rant of mine.
- Anton Mravcek 17:58, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I admit the choice of term was unfortunate. Summary edits were never meant to be anything but light-hearted comments, I thought. I'm sorry if it offended you so mightily.

Help
[edit]Hi, Anton. As a native English speaker can you, please, see Talk:Slovenians and say a few words about those matters. I would be very grateful for any help since we collaborate so long in Slovene wikipedia. I am a little bit sad because some users are not respecting works and contributions of other users. As I see, you are also using a term "Slovene" instead of 'Slovenian' as a native speaker :-) Best regards. --xJaM 00:11, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thank you Anton for your fast reply. I have decided to use those 'preferred' terms, which are propagated by BT2 and some other users (Nohat, ~) just for the sake of the order here and not because they persuaded me. I can say also that they do not respect naming conventions as many articles were at first written using term "Slovene". This was also some year before categories, so they also do not fit in this sheme. Best regards. --xJaM 19:14, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
One
[edit]You are right. I'm was just pissed off with my additions to that section being amended or deleted for their frivolity and their demanding a little from the reader. I must have forgotten that once I edit a page the text no longer belongs to me. I do think that that whole section is a bit ridiculous and have to restrain myself from posting an unbounded number of things in there. "One is 1/666 of the number if the Beast. One is half of two, and the ratio of one to the square root of two is the ratio between the lengths of the sides of a sheet of A4 paper. One is the number of thumbs on an average hand ..." where does one stop?
- I think a good rule of thumb is: if this tidbit that is true of the number 1 was true of some other integer, would it be worth mentioning at the article on that integer?
- These issues need to be discussed more thoroughly at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Numbers. Anton Mravcek 22:41, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
Miles O'Brien
[edit]The journalist Miles O'Brien hosts American Morning on CNN, one of CNN's flagship shows. Internationally, CNN is still the #1 news network. Respectfully, Star Trek cannot even keep strong enough ratings to stay on the air. As for Homer Simpson, The Simpsons have won multiple emmy awards and are the most recognizable cartoon in television history. Miles O'Brien the journalist is more known (and real) than a character from a syndicated TV show that has been off the air for years. Now, I realize this is the internet where all sci-fi is universally beloved and worshipped, but this is an academic website...the CNN journalist is much more important. BigGuy219 19 August 2005
At point during the fun little move war you two had, you moved several pages via cut-and-paste. The mess you left behind was quit complicated - the history of "Miles O'Brien (journalist)" was half there, and half under "Miles O'Brien (Star Trek)", and the history of "Miles O'Brien (Star Trek)" was half there, and half under "Miles O'Brien (Star Trek character)". After an hour or so of work, I have cleaned this all up. Never, ever, ever move a page via cut-and-paste. If the "Move this page" button does not work, use WP:RM. Numbers
[edit]Sorry for my lack of knowledge in these matters. It was all due to unfortunate coincidences, since i took the bolded wordy form of subsection starters from 121 (number) and the capital M in maths from 182 (number)... :-s -- Jokes Free4Me 21:39, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Come and See reply
[edit]Yes, there was some speculation... but it was speculation based upon a reasonable extrapolation. Furthermore, he also deleted a valid rating from Finland (K-16) along with everything else. I think it would be the lesser evil to keep the paragraph, although perhaps it could be reworded... or moved to its own section. I still believe that the primary purpose of Wikipedia should be to provide usefull information rather than abide by its own rules. Of course, those rules usually work to this end, but in cases where they don't it's best to try to work our way around them if possible. As I said, if you feel that the section can be reworded to better comply with wiki policy, please do so. Esn 21:42, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

B flat etc.
[edit]No, I didn't discuss it with anyone else. In my experience, sharp or flat notes are almost always written "A flat", "G sharp", etc. I have loads of classical CDs and a fair amount of piano manuscript music, and hardly any of it places a hyphen between the letter and the word "sharp" or "flat" (or "natural", for that matter). I assumed that one person had written the articles using a less common variant that he or she considered to be the best option. Do you prefer the insertion of the hyphen? OEIS

Mathematics article grading
[edit]I noticed your comment on the importance rating given to Znám's problem, and I was wondering if you would want to help out with on-going project to grade mathematics articles? Have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Wikipedia 1.0 for details. Anyone can grade articles - there are no special requirements. Tompw 15:49, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- I would at least hope that whoever's grading importance knows at least a little something about the topic. I could help grade articles on various number theory topics, but I have no business grading articles about calc or trig. Anton Mravcek 17:32, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- Well, true enough, but the same applies to any article you edit. My poitn was that you odn't have to be an admin or go through any special selection process. Tompw 00:53, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

An editor has nominated Ada Dietz, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ada Dietz and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. In-universe tags
[edit]Hi, I wasn't the one that put the tags there, but I have placed in-universe tags on fictional subjects on wikipedia. The reason the tags are in place, not to dispute that the information in the article is fictional, that is known. What needs to be done is in-universe information needs to be trimmed down, and real-world information needs to be the primary point of the articles, i.e. casting information, character development (real-world, i.e. writing), critical commentary, reception, etc. This is the reason the tags are in place, these need to be the primary point of articles about fictional subjects. As long as the information that is in-universe is the primary subject of the article, it is tagged to bring to the attention of editors to please contribute to help clean the article up. Hope this clears things up about why they were tagged as such. There is a link on the tag to click on regarding the in-universe policy also, for further reference. Thank you. Ejfetters 16:10, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- But have you actually read the articles, or are you just assuming they lack real-world info? In at least one case, other users have tried to address this, but the tag gets slapped right back on. This tells me that the tagger (which you tell me is not you) doesn't care about Wikipedia, but merely about discrediting articles he doesn't like because he was unable to get them deleted. Anton Mravcek 16:14, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yes I have read the articles myself, some of them I didn't quite agree with the tagging, others I read and tagged myself. We aren't trying to get them deleted, we are trying as part of WikiProject Star Trek trying to get the articles up to a better standard, so they may be nominated for good article or featured article by the standards set forth for those articles. Currently, the Kira Nerys article has had good information added to it, but we still need more. I myself am researching real-world info about TNG characters to add to the articles, but I haven't added what I've found yet, trying to rework the articles before I do that. I don't remember any Star Trek character articles ever getting nominated for deletion, maybe I'm wrong. The tag doesn't nominate it for deletion, it simply draws attention to users, kinda saying, hey - we need some more info, if ya got it, please help us out. I myself am a big Trek fan, and don't want to see any of these get deleted, I want the articles to be so much better than they can be. Ejfetters 16:23, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- I've been one of several users to restore in-universe tags to the character articles. As far as I know, they've never been AfDed -- and I take perverse pleasure in running a lot of fiction-related material through the AfD process. But character, no. And, as I mentioned on another talk page, the in-universe tag is not meant to be disparaging; it's unfortunate that you interpret it as such. They serve to attract the attention of editors in a position to add needed information. For example, I don't have the DS9 companion or DVD commentaries, so I can't add a whole lot of production info. and other real-world information required by WP:FICT and WP:WAF -- but, other editors do, and I hope the flag draws their attention and focus. Similarly, the in-universe tags in a lot of Star Wars vehicle articles caught my eye; I took up the onus to improve them, and one is now tagged as a Good Article and I and other editors are working on making it a Featured Project. So, please don't interpret the in-universe tag as an attempt to criticize; rather, they are attempts to flag other editors' attention for improvement. --EEMeltonIV 16:27, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- On my talk page you've said the right words, but you haven't said the right words on the article talk page. The right words would be tailored to each specific article and would show that you have read each and every article you tagged. Because right now it just looks like you want to make sure those articles have some tag, any tag, that makes them look bad. Anton Mravcek 23:32, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- Well, please try to adhere to Wikipedia's "assume good faith" policy. I think your perception of why I or any editor puts a tag on an article is a minority and wholly off-base opinion. --EEMeltonIV 04:21, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
- Actions speak louder than words, and right now, your actions make assuming good faith exceedingly difficult (or perhaps you've meant it as some kind of test from the beginning?). Anyway, responsible tagging is not something I invented, though maybe I did come up with the name. The concept has been around as long as tags have, along with the awareness that tags can be abused. Anton Mravcek 22:27, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

D minor
[edit]Always subject to debate of course but-- (and I am enough of a Brian fan to have heard all of his symphonies, a few in several performances (the wonderful no. 2 in three, I think), both concertos and the concerto for orchestra, one of his operas- only one so far- among other works- multiple times in many cases and looking forward to hearing more- not enjoying all of them, but many!...- to attempt to establish at too much length, I hope that it is not subjective judgment that colors my thought here (protesting too much I guess.) )- removing Mahler 3 before removing the Gothic? :) I'm not at all sure I'd remove the Gothic either, with you there... and thank you for beginning to pare the list. piccolo in Michael Haydn's symphonies

- The truth is stranger than fiction: Michael Haydn never used piccolo, but he did use clarinet once. I'm confident that the Cambridge music guide on Beethoven's Fifth will provide us the name of the right composer using piccolo before Beethoven. Anton Mravcek (talk) 20:09, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

I wholly agree with you, piping should be used to make Wikipedia read more like proper English than Fortran, but many decisions made early on by people who don't realize there's a difference between a computer language and a natural language still plague us. It's policy not to pipe on disambiguation pages — never mind that doing so would make it read more like a lexicon than a computer manual — and who are mere mortals like you and me to question policy ? Illegitimi non carborundum. — Robert Greer (talk) 18:37, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- Sometimes you have to take policies on a case by case basis. "Symphony No. 1 (Beethoven) written by Ludwig van Beethoven" reads kinda dumb, in my opinion, in part because it contains redundance, so I went ahead and changed it. I would probably leave alone something like "The Return (2006 film) directed by Asif Kapadia." Anton Mravcek (talk) 17:36, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

However, I am having issues with the quality of the images: they are generally of too low a resolution to look good on a full-size monitor (at least for me). I've reverted the most extreme case (8th symphony), but I see the problem in varying degrees with the other new images used in symphonies 1-7. If we could find higher-resolution versions of these images it would fix the problem. I don't know whether I have some specific browser setting that's causing this issue but all other images on Wikipedia generally (including the older Bruckner image) look fine to me. I've included the 8th symphony image below. Cheers. Grover cleveland (talk) 02:53, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- The way you've put that picture on my talk page it does look all JPEG artifacty and crap. In fact, I would scan it myself, but oddly enough, of the four Bruckner books I have checked out from the library, that picture is in none of them... Anton Mravcek (talk) 14:11, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Anton, The image you placed on my talk page looks fine. Please feel free to replace that in the 8th symphony page. Cheers, Grover cleveland (talk) 17:58, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Number table to template
[edit]Great work! Just do as many as you can at a time, as you can see, I haven't done any for a while, but I'll do a whole bunch when I get the chance. Jkasd 05:27, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
Source for Kent Kennan quote?
[edit]Do you have a source for the Kent Kennan quote about Wagner tubas: "they are really modified horns"? I wasn't able to find one online. WeisheitSuchen (talk) 19:58, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Haydn Symphony Articles
[edit]Hello, there's been some editting/reverting going on in the Joseph Haydn symphony articles. There's a discussion over at User talk:Horn of Plenty which is discussing the issue of section headers. Feel free to weigh in. Thanks. DavidRF (talk) 23:21, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Good job merging the short sections. I hadn't thought of that before, but it really does look a lot better now. —Politizer( talk • contribs ) 23:07, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, glad you liked it. Anton Mravcek (talk) 22:40, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
Family Guy
[edit]Do not change "Baby on Board" from a redirect to a page without a description! If you look, the MSN site has no description of the plot of the episode! Also, this edit summary, "Blind! The reference was right there!" is not constructive. CTJF83Talk 17:47, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
- OK, you win, I stand defeated. I will never again edit the article about the Family Guy episode titled "Baby on Board." I swear. But I might edit articles about Family Guy episodes with similar titles that have a word more or a word fewer. Anton Mravcek (talk) 22:51, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Blocked
[edit]After investigating a report at Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/PrimeFan, I have come to the conclusion that this account, along with a large number of other accounts, are all being operated by the same person as abusive sockpuppets. Operating multiple accounts is not permitted when they are used to edit the same articles and debates. However, due to the nature of the IP addresses involved, it is possible that some of these users have coincidentally shared a computer or IP address. If this is the case, you may request to be unblocked by emailing the blocking admin or the unblock mailing list with your official University email address. This is to prevent one person from spoofing the admins with multiple free throwaway email accounts such as gmail or yahoomail. (Your email address will not be stored or used other than for verification.) If this is a misunderstanding I apologize in advance, and your account will be unblocked as soon as you provide proof that you are a separate individual. Be advised two checkusers examined this case and agreed on the results. — Rlevse • Talk • 02:58, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Vienna Symphonic Library
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Vienna Symphonic Library requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
